Uruoi is a Japanese skincare brand that highlights the need for hydrated skin
Combining science with skincare, Uruoi creates a line of products that can cater to any skin type or need.
A rise in the popularity of extensive skincare routines has left many people searching for products to complete their new multiple-step regimens, but how many of these products can actually help?
Skincare brand Uruoi can help you find products that are perfectly fit for your specific skin type and needs.
How one ingredient created the foundation of Uruoi
In 1988, a formula was created using fermentation technology with lactic acid bacteria to produce hyaluronic acid. The resulting acid could reduce inflammation and help skin retain moisture. It was named DENKA PURE HYALURONIC ACID D.P.H.A.
A year later in 1989, a skincare brand decided to use D.P.H.A. as the cornerstone of all its products, becoming the brand Uruoi. The word uruoi in Japanese means moisture, and luckily, that's just what the D.P.H.A. acid could provide.
In fact, 1 gram of D.P.H.A. can hold up to 1000 times its own weight in water - thus ensuring the moisture your skin needs to be balanced.

Which Uruoi products are better for your skin type, the U-Series or the S-Series?
Uruoi carries two ranges of skincare products: the U-Series and the S-Series.
Each series has a number on each product to show which stage in the regimen it should be used at. Additionally, they each have sun or moon on it, or both, to show what time of the day it would be most useful at.
The S-Series
This series of products is meant for those with sensitive skin or for those who want a more mild formula choice. The S-Series is free of petroleum surfactant, colorant, ethanol, mineral oils, unnatural fragrances, and other chemicals.
Currently, there are two products in the S-Series: S1, the extra mild cleanser, and S3, the extra mild lotion, which acts similarly to a toner. Uruoi recommends you use these in addition to products such as U2 (cleansing foam) and U5 (moisture milk), for your skincare process. Both U-Series products recommended are also free of ingredients that can inflame your skin.
The S-Series products are best for these skin types:
- Sensitive Skin
Sensitive skin is irritated and inflamed easily and cannot handle many common skincare ingredients like fragrances or sulfates, among others.
- Oily/Combination Skin
Oily skin produces too much oil, creating an overproduction of sebum which can lead to enlarged pores and acne.
Combination skin is when oily skin can be prone to having dry patches, leaving the skin at risk for both acne and aging issues. Many people with these skin types also have issues with sensitivity to skincare products.
The U-Series
Products in the U-Series are meant for dry skin, oily/combination skin, and normal skin. They contain a higher percentage of the D.P.H.A. formula, which can be harsh on some sensitive skin types.
However, for those skin types that don't react to the formula, D.P.H.A. and the other ingredients in the U-Series can provide assistance in restoring the balance of your skin by upping your hydration levels and giving your skin a natural glow.
Additionally, the U-Series is most recommended in helping skincare issues such as loss of firmness, uneven skin tone, skin dryness, skin discoloration, and lack of radiance.
There are seven products in the U-Series: U1 (make-up cleanser), U2 (cleansing foam), U3 (skin lotion/toner), U4 (essence), U5 (moisturizing milk), U6 (emollient cream), and UA (a moisturizing gel).
The U-Series products are best for these skin types:
- Dry Skin
Dry skin lacks natural oil to create moisture, thereby leaving the skin unprotected and at a higher risk of aging quickly.
- Oily/Combination Skin
As said above, oily skin produces too much oil, thus creating an overproduction of sebum which can lead to enlarged pores and acne. Combination skin is when oily skin can be prone to having dry patches, leaving the skin at risk for both acne and aging issues.
- Normal Skin
Normal skin is considered the most balanced skin type, but can still fall prey to issues caused by genetic or environmental factors.
Japanese minimalism and Uruoi
Influenced by Buddhism, the philosophy behind Japanese minimalism states to live with only what you need and what brings you happiness and balance. In other words - less is more.
The skincare brand Uruoi applies this idea of Japanese minimalism to all of their products, using limited ingredients that can provide high levels of care for each skin type.
The future of Uruoi skincare products
Wanting to be able to satisfy the needs of every consumer, Uruoi has set up an online process where they show you what products are most recommended for your skin type. Here, you can find products for every step of the skincare regimen: makeup cleanser, cleansing foam, toner, essence, cream, and more. You'll also see which should be used in the morning, at night, or for both.
By using only a few powerful ingredients, Uruoi has been able to create a hydrating formula that'll make your skin look and feel more balanced. Their future will remain rooted in science and in Japanese minimalism as they continue their search for the ideal fit for each skin type.
